Results of the China-Chile Joint Research Project (CCJRF) 2022

Based on the principles established in a 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the National Commission of Scientific and Technological Research of the Republic of Chile (CONICYT), and the more specific guidelines described in the Agreement between the National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC), the Chinese Astronomical Society, the Chilean Astronomical Society (SOCHIAS) and CONICYT (pdf) in 2015, the Call for China-Chile Joint Research Project (CCJRF) was issued for the calendar year 2022 to the astronomy communities of both countries to promote the collaborations. Up to four collaborative projects will be supported, for a duration up to 2 years and with a funding level not to exceed 75,000 USD per year.

Eleven proposals were received for the 2022 call, and the have been evaluated by a panel of senior Chilean and Chinese astronomers and reviewed by the China-Chile Joint Committee (JCCC) in June, 2023. Among these high quality joint research projects, four teams were selected to be supported by the Joint Fund for the current round.

They are:

  • “Characterizing Primordial Distant Comets” by Bin Yang from Universidad Diego Portales and Yuhui Zhao from Purple Mountain Observatory
  • “A New Window into the X-ray Emitting Plasma in Black Holes” by Claudio Ricci from Universidad Diego Portales and Luis Ho from Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University
  • “Unleashing the Power of Combined Radial-velocity, Astrometry, and Direct Imaging Modeling to Constrain thePopulation of Widely-Orbiting Gas Giant Planets” by James Jenkins from Universidad Diego Portales and Fabo Feng from Tsung-Dao Lee Institute at Shanghai Jiaotong University
  • “The Orion GMC: Galactic Star Formation with ALMA Legacy Data” by Diego Mardones from Universidad de Chile and Ke Wang from Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University
