Results of The evaluation of the 2015 China-Chile Joint project

Based on the guidelines established in a 2013 MoU between CAS and CONICYT, and more specific articles described in a 2015 Agreement between NAOC and SOCHIAS, CASSACA has decided to support up to four collaborative projects every year, each for 1-2 years duration and with a funding level of about 75,000 USD per year on average. In August 2015, a call for joint research proposal was issued and distributed to the astronomy communities of both countries. More than twenty grant proposals were received by the deadline, and these have been reviewed by a panel of senior Chilean and Chinese astronomers. Among these very high quality joint research projects, five teams were selected to be supported by the Joint Fund for the current round.

These include:

  • “Modeling the Structure and Kinematics of the Milky Way Bulge” by Dr. Juntai Shen (PI) et al. , Shanghai Astronomical Observatory
  • “Star Formation Processes in Large Galaxy Cluster Survey Fields” , by Dr. Thomas H. Puzia, Pontifica Universidad Catolica, and Dr. Eric W. Peng, Peking University (Co-PIs)
  • “Probing the End of Cosmic Reinoization with High-redshift Galaxies” , by Dr. Zhenya Zheng, Pontifica Universidad Catolica and Dr. Linhua Jiang, Peking University (Co-PIs)

Home institutions of Chinese PIs (Left) and Chilean PIs (Middle), which suggest wide distribution among all astronomical institutions in both countries. It is also clear that the number of proposals focusing on stars are similar with those on galaxies and cosmology. On the other hand, there are relatively few instrumentation proposals, which may be a consequence of the current setup of budget and time scales and suggests possible future improvements
